Trader Joe's Trip

Today I only worked until 1, so I headed to Trader Joe's to pick up some groceries for the week. And guess what? I forgot the ONE actual necessity we needed-toilet paper. UGH, so annoying. That's what happens when you don't make a grocery list. I guess I'll be going back out tonight to get some! Here are some of the goodies I found:

You can't go to Trader Joe's during the month of December and not buy AT LEAST one box of Candy Cane Joe Joe's. They are to die for. I bought 2 boxes-one for us, and one for my parents!

I strolled through the aisles and found these cute little potatoes. I like potatoes, and I like small things, so these were the perfect find. I am making them for dinner tonight!

Onto the cereal aisle (one of my weaknesses). I could probably live off of cereal if I had to...if only it was healthy. However these seemed somewhat healthy. Wheat and bran, you can't go wrong...right? I opened these babies on the way home and had a handful-they were well worth the 2 dollars! Let's hope I'm not allergic to gluten for real, because these are filled with wheat and would most likely do my body harm.

This is one of my favorite finds at Trader Joe's. Pre-cut and peeled butternut squash. One time I bought a whole butternut squash and was so intimidated that it ended up rotting on my counter because I let it sit there too long :/ This is easy, affordable, and organic!

I stocked up on Clif Bars for Jeff's weekly lunches.

And I found a new beverage for us in the beverage aisle-Pomegranate Green Tea. I'll let you know how that tastes once I try it!

One thing I hate spending money on is meat. Maybe that's why my B12 is low? I refuse to buy non-organic meat and the organic is just not in our grocery budget. However I did splurge a bit this week because we need some protein and bought some chicken breasts (again, for dinner tonight with the potatoes). After reading "In Defense of Food," I've learned that we need to not think of food as being too expensive simply because the food industry has made food so inexpensive, and rather spend more of our income on food. I'm trying to remember that-but it is still hard to buy a $12.00 small chicken when there are $3 dollar chickens at the grocery store next door...

We always, always, always have bananas.

I did find some non-food items as well. I ran out of face wash this week so bought some Trader Joe's Spa facial cleanser-sounds fancy.

Finally, one of our favorite quick dinners (we probably eat these once a week) are Mahi Mahi burgers. We usually grill them because they do stink up the apartment pretty badly!

I obviously bought a lot more, but just wanted to share a few things with you! The total I spent was $79.00 which wasn't bad for us. I know, it seems like a lot-but when you buy organic it adds up. Jeff and I keep a $75.00 weekly grocery budget so I did well. Hope you enjoyed a look into my grocery bag today :)

Question of the day: What is one grocery item you can't live without? ...the one thing that you run to the grocery store for when you run out (ok besides toilet paper). Ours is probably string cheese!

Butternut squash is amazingly simple!!!! All you have to do is cut it in half lengthwise (you may want Jeff's help here), scoop out the seeds inside, cut it into 2-3 in sections. Turn upside down in a pyrex pan with about 1 inch of water. Bake at 400 until the skin blisters. Let it cool a little bit, then scoop it out. Seriously, baked is SOOOOOOO much better than boiled:):):)
